Hi Guys,

I’ve just launched cssfirst.com, a css website gallery similar to cssdrive.

I would really appreciate honest reviews of the site as for the past couple of days I’ve been constantly working towards improving it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Oh and let me know if you would like your site showcased and I’ll review it. (visit: the submission page)

Ah, my apologies guys. The site’s been absolutely fine, but typical… the server went down a few hours ago. It should be back up today.

Internal Server Error. Check error logs (by ftp if reported in file or from cpanel).
Possible reasons: bad .htaccess (delete it), public write permissions on a folder that contain scripts (remove write permissions)...

By the way I’m aware that only the main page is up right now, as my host are being very poor at fixing their problems. However, I would still appreciate a review of this, and the other pages should be ok soon enough.

Thanks.

The site is up for me, so I may as well put my two cents in…

The design in itself isn’t too bad, except for the overuse of the colour yellow. You’ve been able to make a pretty nice and simple vector piece of art up the time, which is nice, but I really didn’t notice it that much, since my eyes were immediately diverted to the bright center column and the screenshots. You might want to emphasis on the screenshots more than the categories though…

The only thing that I would question about it is that it doesn’t really stand out from the website galleries. It practically looks like a minature mix of cssdrive and cssmania…

The center yellow column could be lighter - a transparent yellow, as the color is very strong now and eye catching. Also a forum would be nice.

Thanks, I thought about a transparent yellow but it may look a little washed out. I’m going to try something different with that menu later today.

Keep the reviews coming folks :)

The background should be washed out as content matters and should be highlighted. Content links and pictures should be more colorful.

Good point, I can’t really make the thumbnails more colourful, but I’ll try maybe adding a colourful border to them or something. Tomorrow I’ll also be moving the central column left and making it have a much lighter background.

Anymore advice is appreciated :)

it’s really not the design, which is hard to look at just because of the colours not the ‘design’ or layout at all. but it’s hard for me to distinguish this site for the literally dozens ( i know i’ve visted at least about 50 of them) sites out there. Think about what people really want to get from these galleries. It’s a difficult thing to do to come into a saturated market but if you just want to copy someone else w/ a passable design and concept and hope you can derive some ad rev from then go for it.

An unusual logo would make a difference… something weird like an animal painting or tattooed or body painted naked girl :))

Ok, I’ve been working hard at updating/improving the site and I think things are looking a lot better. One big change is that I moved the categories column to the left to bring the main content into more focus.

Can I please get some opinions on the changes?

Many thanks :)

Little too subtle, but nice looking site :)  Maybe add some more contrast to the design.  Cheers.
