waynem80 - 12 March 2007 01:42 AM Oh, damn that really sucks, I’ll try to start converting it then. what EMS size should i use to be = to 12px font?
wayne
Wayne, don’t go converting your whole site based on my recommendations, however I would do some further research. If you want the site to be truly accessible and universal you are going to have to look into percentage fonts for IE and fixed fonts for firefox and other browsers.
For instance if you set your font size in the body to 10px then every font size from there will be set in relation to that. So if you wanted 12px font you would do font-size: 1.2em get it? But this doesn’t work right for IE as it sees the body tag of 10px and won’t increase properly, which is why you must do a keyword and or percentage for the fonts in relation to IE’s default font size which i believe is 16px. It gets a bit tricky but say you wanted IE’s default font size to be 12px instead of 16 you would set percent for IE (either using a hack or conditional comment) to 75% which is 12px - then from there any em that you use will be based off of 12px. Or to make things easier using 10px would be 62.5%, so any font size you specify via ems from that point on will be based on 10px, so if you want 16pixels for a certain heading or paragraph to stand out it would be 1.6em, get it?

:) yeah i do get it now… IT make sense finally :) . I’ll tell ya what, it does seem rather difficult. My first start of this site was in august. And before that i had never had classes experience or anything else with design and or coding. I 100% self taught. And i’m currently learning PHP so i can code the community functions within my site. When you take all the different things you have to learn to build a site (it’s overwhelming) I now see why professional site builders work in teams or outsource different parts of their websites.
Anyway, your right i want have to breakdown the site and start from sratch. I’m just going to change some of the graphics to expand when the font sizes do.
? about the PHP, do you know much about php coding?
Thanks,
wayne

I was wondering how to get my community functioning… I know that’s kinda broad, but i want to code what will be my community ground in php. And i what my groups to be like http://www.suicidegirls.com and have the same type of layout and functions, the groups are kinda set up like a comment system there. any scripts you know i could use, or any direction to point me in?

honestly if you want to drive to the store in your car you don’t build the car right? Its been done, why spend eons learning then programming, best bet is to learn php through a book to get the basics, then experiment, then make tweaks to what you’ve downloaded. There are plenty of bulletin board systems out there for you to implement w/o even knowing php too well. I didn’t look too depth at suicide girls but i’m sure their using a CMS (content managment system) to well, manage content, such as a forum or a blog. What exactly do you want this community to do? Do you want it to be a forum like this for a blog? Look into modx, joomla and drupal to name a few CMS’s that are pretty user friendly.
There are tons of php forums, google “php forums” to find some. A few that I know of are phpbb and http://www.simplemachines.org/ SMF

I don’t want a BB type of setup though, I want the groups to be more like a comments system like SUICIDEGIRLS.com ,
I have thought about using wordpress to do this. I’m just not sure if it’s able to.
If it is, then i can us WP for Member signup, login, profiles, etc as well as the comment/Groups system.

I would look into using WP, it is a good blogger which will allow you to have comments and it doubles as a CMS, good luck

Not bad at all for a first site. I’m impressed with the web design and the color scheme. It looks OK to me in IE6.

I had to take some time off from the site for a while, but i’m now updating it. and plan to give it a little bit more of a webby 2.0 feel, but still keepin the layout.
I duno about others here, but sometimes you’ve just gotta leave it for a while to get it right :)

This is true. If you leave it for a little while you see it from different angle afterwards and may notice things you haven’t noticed before.
Also I don’t know what your intention was but the text under the tabs “Course directory” , “Ratings and Reviews”, “Recent Club Groups Rambling”.... is not clickable in IE7. Maybe this was your intention but it leaves the visitor with the impression that these are links. I don’t know if it is IE7 or you made them that way. Again I like the design and the layout.

The site…eh…I’d give it a 4/10 or C-
too many ‘speech ballons’ not saying anything useful… “links” unclickable.. TOO MANY CALL OUT SECTIONS the suicide girls site is nice looking, and, once you think about it, will be easy for you to do.
As far as doing your own development, the other poster earlier who suggested you instead JUST GET SOME BASIC COMPETENCE INSTEAD AND FIND SOMETHING AND MODIFY IT TO YOUR NEEDS is damn right!
there is too much EXCELLENT stuff out there, for you to go wasting time reinventing the wheel.
You CAN get a Suicide Girls type site using a forum as a backend (SMF or phpBB) and that is in fact what I would recommend.
You see, there is SO MUCH that you have to deal with when you allow / enable people to enter data like comments and posts on your site.
Permissions, who can do what, and when - how do you give privileges (and take them away) all those features are built into any forum.
most of them, have an API (programming interface) that you can utilize to take advantage of their code, already written. That would be the best use of your time.

I see, so i take a forum like phpBB and find an API to suit my needs… What is the best forum to use? also, Would it be better for me to use wordpress then or Drupal? I guess what i’m really getting at… which will be the best, but also the easiest for me to set up/use…
thanks,
wayne
