Many companies want to cut their costs and therefore they prefer freelancers. You can check the list in craiglist[.]com and servana[.]com. In these portal communities, SMB owners get many projects through these types of portal networks.

my question is… how much do you have to know before you can freelance. I see alot of people saying it is good for learning but i doubt anyone will pay you for doing crappy work so you must have some working abilities.

You start small, on the side. If you keep your prices super inexpensive to start with, get some work under your belt, and as you get better and better with each project, you can compete with the big boy and raise your prices where they should be. It’s a process. I was freelancing for 10 years before I even considered going full time with it, but I think thats because I didn’t realize I was capable of running my own business.

A lot of my friends at school were interactive multimedia or graphics design majors. I know a few of them ended up being very successful with web design. Others tried and weren’t talented enough, so they went on to developing marketing campaigns. Either way, its definitely a lucrative career nowadays.

The short answer would be: you need to know how to do everything described in a contract or job proposal. The long answer (which is ironically shorter than the short answer) would be: everything under the sun.

There’s some comfort in knowing that almost all freelancers do a little learning on the job. It’s inevitable, in fact.
